The Digital Seller Exit Checklist

A step-by-step list for moving a digital-only shop off Shopify without losing customer downloads, order history, or search rankings.

Nothing here covers inventory transfer, shipping accounts, or fulfillment. It only covers moving digital delivery, customer access, and order records, which is a different job.

Shopify raised its costs again in April 2026: card processing on the Basic plan moved to 2.9% + 30¢, with another 0.6% added for premium cards and 1% for international transactions. The Basic plan itself went from $29 to $39 a month, and sellers who use a payment gateway other than Shopify Payments still pay an extra 2% penalty on top. None of that buys a digital seller anything extra, since digital products need no shipping tools at all.

Before you touch anything

Do this while your Shopify plan is still active. Some of it becomes difficult or impossible after you cancel.

Export your product catalog. Admin → Products → Export, including titles, descriptions, and prices.Do this even for products you plan to rewrite from scratch. Download every digital file you deliver. Pull the source files from Shopify's Digital Downloads app or whatever delivery app you use.Delivery apps can lock file access the moment your plan lapses. Export your customer list and purchase history. You'll need this to honour existing licences and re-send downloads after the move. Export full order history. Keep a copy outside Shopify for accounting and tax records, regardless of when you actually leave. List every active discount code, bundle, and subscription price. These don't transfer automatically and need to be rebuilt by hand. Check where your domain is registered. A domain bought through Shopify needs an extra transfer step; one bought elsewhere just needs its DNS repointed. List any apps doing delivery or access work. Licence-key generators, gated-content apps, membership plugins. Each one needs a direct replacement on the new shop.

Build before you leave

Run the new shop alongside Shopify. Nothing here requires cancelling anything yet.

Set up your new shop and re-upload products. Use the exports from Step 1 rather than retyping everything. Rebuild your active discounts and bundles. From the list you made in Step 1. Run one real test purchase, start to finish. Payment, delivery email, and download or membership access, exactly as a customer would experience it.

The cutover

This is the only step order that matters. Doing these out of order is what loses customers and search traffic.

Point your domain at the new shop. Only after the test purchase in Step 2 works cleanly. Email existing customers with updated access links. Anyone with a past purchase should get a direct way to re-download or log in. Set up redirects from your old product URLs. Protects anyone arriving from an old bookmark, email, or Google result. Cancel your Shopify plan last. Only once the new shop is live, tested, and your customers have been notified. Not before.
