Checking Search Console today turned up a section I hadn't paid attention to before: Generative AI features, still in beta. Total impressions for the last three months: one. That one impression won't change my fortunes but it is an indication that someone is paying attention to my site.
What This Report Actually Tracks
Most of Search Console measures traditional search results, the blue links. This report tracks something different: appearances inside Google's AI-generated answers, AI Overviews and AI Mode, where Google summarises an answer directly instead of just listing pages. It's newer, it's beta, and the data is thin for most sites right now, which is exactly why one impression is worth looking at rather than dismissing.
Why One Impression Still Counts
Djangify is documented in this category from zero traffic, so there's no pretending one impression is a breakthrough. What it is: a real, if small, sign that the structural work already built into the platform, schema.org markup, the AI-specific meta tags on blog posts, the E-E-A-T author identity fields, is doing the job it was built for. Being legible to an AI system that's deciding what to summarise is a different task from ranking in a traditional list, and this is the first evidence any of it is actually landing.
The Pages That Showed Up
Two pages carried that one impression: the homepage, and How Djangify Works, the architecture explainer. That makes sense. Both are definitional pages, the kind of content an AI summary would reach for when answering a question about what something actually is, rather than a narrower how-to post further down the funnel.
What I'll Be Watching For Next
Not a target number. More just whether the count moves at all over the coming months, and if it does, which pages and which kinds of queries it's attached to. That pattern will say more than any single number would.
Checking Your Own
In Search Console, look under Performance for Generative AI features. If it's not showing anything yet, that's not a failure, most sites won't see activity here for a while. It's worth checking periodically rather than obsessing over, the same way the rest of Search Console is worth a regular glance rather than a daily one.
