Your customers can buy without creating an account first. This guide explains what they see, what happens to their account afterwards, and what to tell a customer who says they did not receive anything. There is nothing for you to set up.
What the customer does
- They add a product to the cart and go to checkout without logging in.
- Before payment they are asked for their first name and email address. That is all. There is no last name field and no password.
- They pay through Stripe as normal.
If the email address already belongs to a registered customer, the purchase is stopped and they are asked to log in instead. Their cart is kept while they do.
What happens after they pay
Djangify creates an account for them automatically, so they can come back later and download their purchase again. Because they have not chosen a password yet, the account is created without one.
They are sent one email with the subject Set your password. It thanks them for the order and contains a link to choose a password. Using that link also confirms their email address, so it is the only step they need.
- When they choose their password they see Choose your password wording, are logged straight in and see a welcome message.
- If they open the link on a different device or browser, they see a message saying their email is verified and a fresh password link has been emailed to them.
- A normal password reset for an existing customer is unchanged.
If a customer says they got no email
- Ask them to check their spam or junk folder. The email comes from your shop's sending address.
- Check that your email configuration works by placing a test order yourself. See Account Email and Deliverability.
- The customer can always use Forgot your password on the login page with the email address they used at checkout. That sends a new link.
Seeing guest orders in your admin
Guest orders appear under Orders like any other. Each order has an event timeline showing payment success or failure, refunds and status changes. See Order Emails, Order Timeline and Refunds.
Cart page prompt
The cart page also invites visitors to log in if they already have an account, so returning customers do not accidentally buy as a guest.
